Beyond the Drill: Creating a Calm, Comprehensive Dental Experience with Stephanie McKinnell and Namrita Sandhu
Your Teeth Are Telling You More Than You Think: A Conversation with Haven Dental Hygiene and Whitening
When most of us think about a dental appointment, we picture a quick cleaning, maybe some flossing advice we will probably ignore, and a reminder to come back in six months. What we do not usually picture is a blood pressure check that might save our life, a cancer screening, or a conversation about how what is happening in our mouth could be connected to Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, or even a difficult pregnancy.
That is exactly the kind of conversation I had recently on the True North Compliance Podcast with Stephanie McKinnell and Namrita Sandhu, the co-founders of Haven Dental Hygiene and Whitening in White Rock, BC.
Stephanie and Namrita are both dental hygiene practitioners — a designation that goes beyond the standard registered dental hygienist training and allows them to run a fully independent practice, without a dentist on site. They opened Haven because they wanted to do things differently: longer, more personalized appointments, a calmer and more welcoming environment, and the freedom to practice their full scope of care without the time pressures of a traditional dental office.
And their full scope is broader than most people realize. Researchers have now identified links between oral inflammation and 17 systemic diseases. The most well-known are hypertension and type 2 diabetes, but the list also includes Alzheimer's disease, erectile dysfunction, preterm birth, and low birth weight. Specific oral bacteria have even been found in the brain plaques associated with Alzheimer's. That is not a small thing. That is a reason to take your oral health seriously.
During our conversation, Stephanie shared that Haven has already had to refer multiple patients to their family doctor after routine blood pressure checks revealed dangerously high readings. In at least one case, they came very close to sending a patient directly to the emergency room. These were not elderly patients with known health conditions. They were regular people who came in for a cleaning.
We also talked about what makes a visit to Haven feel different. Think spa, not sterile. Natural light, noise-cancelling headphones, weighted blankets, aromatherapy, and massage chairs during whitening appointments. They use professional-grade Philips Zoom whitening, which is only available through dental professionals, and they take the time to assess each patient individually before recommending it.
We covered myofunctional therapy — a series of exercises to correct tongue posture and promote nasal breathing, which affects jaw development and is linked to sleep apnea in adults. We talked about the right time to brush your teeth (before meals and about 30 minutes after). And we discussed a frustrating legislative change in BC that is set to remove the dental hygiene practitioner designation in April 2026, something both Stephanie and Namrita feel strongly about.
This was a genuinely eye-opening conversation. If you have ever thought of a dental cleaning as a routine, low-stakes appointment, this episode will change your mind.
